I've got hold of Wings of Glory WWI: rules, planes (enough for 4vs4), & a mat. This is the game that FFG apparently licensed to develop X-Wing. It is very similar, albeit with some crucial differences and a rather faster, simpler approach. Rather than plotting one move at a time you plot three but have the opportunity to shoot after each individual maneuvre. Secondly damage is determined by drawing cards rather than using dice and the amount of damage is not revealed although certain features are - (smoke, fire, guns jamming etc.). The advanced rules introduce altitude and the possibility of collisions (bad but not necessarily fatal). There is no initiative nor points - all moves/shots happen simultaneously.
Wings of Glory World War One
I've played it a few times and, in my opinion, it's an absolutely superb little game - quick and easy to play. If you've played X-Wing then you'll be able to pick up the rules in five minutes or less and be playing well very quickly. It also has the opportunity for multiplayer - i.e. each player controls one plane - much like X-Wing.
If anyone is interested I'd be delighted to bring it along next time I'm at the club and we can give it a go.
I should also declare a personal interest - my avatar is a photo of my grandfather, Brigadier R.M. Rodwell AFC, who was in the Royal Flying Corps from 1912-1918 & the Royal Air Force until 1920 when he rejoined the British Army (until 1945). He was one of the original 2 Sqn RFC pilots to fly to France in August 1914 and also formed 19 Squadron RFC and led them on the Somme (based at Vert Galant) from July 1916 - Feb 1917. His successor as 19 Sqn RFC CO, Major Hubert Harvey-Kelly DSO (a pre-war 2 Sqn RFC contemporary), was killed by von Richthofen's Jasta 11 on 29 April 1917 most probably shot down by Lt Kurt Wolff (33 victories, shot down & killed Sept 1917).
