Hi chaps
Some of the other Armada players wanted a run down of how my games panned out following nationals.
So see below the action as much as I could remember....it was a really long day.
Firstly it was a very well run tournament and a very friendly crowd. Also from chatting to a lot of the regulars on the tournament scene they were finding as I did that there were no easy games.
It was a really good day but it was crazy as well. Kicked off at 09:30 in the morning and finished my last game at about 11:30 (me and my opponent were the last to finish so we had a bit of an audience for our final 2 turns.
Here is the play by play.
My list:
Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 400/400
Commander: General Rieekan
Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Fleet Ambush
Navigation Objective: Superior Positions
Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points) (Resolve)
- Yavaris (5 points)
- Veteran Captain (3 points)
= 65 total ship cost
CR90 Corvette A (44 points) (Rebel Dawn)
- Jainas Light (2 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits (7 points)
= 53 total ship cost
[flagship] MC80 Command Cruiser (106 points) (Startide)
- General Rieekan (30 points)
- Adar Tallon (10 points)
- Boosted Comms (4 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures (7 points)
= 157 total ship cost
1 Dash Rendar (24 points)
1 Wedge Antilles (19 points)
1 "Dutch" Vander (16 points)
1 Luke Skywalker (20 points)
1 Han Solo (26 points)
1 Keyan Farlander (20 points)
Game 1 (Rieekan Aces) (Fleet Ambush)
First game was against another Rieekan Aces List….but with a few less Aces.
Was against one of the Armada players from 186th that I haven’t played before (cant remember his name though….all the names sort of blended into each other throughout the loooong day)
We started off on table 21 (last table) and we joked about how much our list must suck to be stuck on the last table for the first game……obviously it has no bearing and is random…..so only way was up!!
As far as I can remember the list was the following:
Assault Frigate with Boosted Comms, Adar Talon, Flight Controllers
Escort Frigate Yavaris
CR90b with Rieekan (lifeboat)
CR90b with Dodonna’s Pride
Luke
Wedge
Han
Dash
Dutch
Started off and I was given 1st Player and I chose Fleet Ambush.
(I never got to choose to go first or second the whole tournament as I was on 400 points exactly)
I wasn’t necessarily concerned about this objective as it put me a lot closer with my MC80 and Yavaris and all my heroes. I set my Corvette in the deployment zone at speed 4 so by the first turn all my ships were back together but just a lot closer to the enemy.
My opponent deployed on the other side of the board and we basically slow rolled towards each other….a very cagey affair due to mirror match.
It was basically our squadrons smashing each other with if I remember only 2 of mine surviving and all of his dying. I killed off his Assault Frigate, and almost got the CR90 Dodonna’s Pride and Yavaris but they both survived on 1 hull (damn them) while his Rieekan lifeboat ran away the whole game and survived perfectly fine.
I lost my Yavaris, Jaina’s Light CR90 and 4/6 squadrons. MC80 was hardly touched.
216 – 183 (think it was) and a 6-5 loss for me
So close and could have swung either way. I was ok with this as I don’t think there was much of a chance of a huge score for either of us with this matchup.
Game 2 (Imperial ISD and Gladiators) (Most Wanted)
In this game I moved up and was on table 16. I played another good guy who had only played 7 times really. It was a good opportunity to learn the game really quickly in a tournament setting.
He only had Imperials so had no idea what any of my cards did. I ran through them with him though and helped him understand what they all did and how the combos matched up.
As far as I can remember the list was the following:
ISD2 with Screed, Needa, and a whole bunch of other upgrade toys
Gladiator 2, Demolisher, ACM (can’t remember the other upgrades)
Gladiator 2 (can’t remember the upgrades)
IG88, Dengar and Boba Fett
He had initiative and chose to go first. I passed him my objective cards and he chose Most Wanted.
Serious mistake if you ask me. So we deployed basically across from one another. I stuck most wanted onto his ISD and chose my Corvette.
Basically the game boiled down to going straight at each other with my Jaina’s Light trying to run around the rear. She did get off a few shots at the ISD but due to the evade from Needa it wasn’t as effective as I had hoped. He also sent Boba Fett after her and combined with some ISD rear shots that chipped shots she eventually went down. Although this did take most of the game and basically took Boba out of the game.
My squadrons meanwhile closed in and mopped up IG88 and Dengar. Taking a few hits from IG88 counter increased from Dengar. His Glads also chipped in with some anti squadron firepower and my aces weren’t looking too healthy. However the MC80 broadside combined with Yavaris front shots all with extra dice against the ISD objective ship and double tapping Keyan and Luke combined with bombing runs by the other Aces soon popped Demo, then the ISD went down and finally the last Gladiator.
I lost Jaina’s Light and I think Han
520 – 123 (think it was) and a 10-1 win for me
So a really enjoyable game and I explained to him where he went wrong and also why picking Most Wanted was a bad idea….especially with an ISD vs Corvette
Game 3 (MC30s, Corvettes and AF) (Most Wanted)
Moved up again to table 5. This game was against a guy from Bournemouth who played Florian in round 2 and thoroughly spanked him. So I had heard about this list from him and didn’t sound like a list I would like to face….but drew him I did.
From what I can remember:
MC30 Admonition, Blissex, APT, OE
MC30 Foresight, Lando, APT, OE
Assault Frigate, Mon Mothma (Can’t remember upgrades)
CR90b (Can’t remember upgrades)
CR90b (Can’t remember upgrades)
Dash
Han
So he once again had initiative and decided to go first. He chose Most Wanted.
We deployed across from each other with my ships all together for mutual support and the squadrons close by. I chose his AF as the objective ship and my corvette.
This is one game that I can’t remember exactly what happened play by play but basically came down to my squadrons taking on his Han and Dash and killing them off. Then waiting for the MC30s to head on in. The double tapping bombers with Yavaris, combined with Luke putting damage straight through really hurt the MC30’s after their runs. Although Mon Mothma did come to the rescue on a few occasions. Did lose Jaina’s Light and Yavaris due to them screening the MC80 from the MC30’s.
By the end of the run on Jaina’s Light with a double arc MC30 with APT’s I think she had taken 14 damage cards!!!!
If I remember correctly I lost Yavaris and Jaina’s Light and Han Solo.
I had killed off everything of his except for Admonition who decided to try and run. Chased it down somewhat but he survived Dash and Luke hitting him by dropping tokens with Admonition like candy to cancel bombing dice in the last turns.
388 – 188 (think it was) and a 8-2 win for me
Game 4 (ISD and Demo and Rhymerball)
Movin on up….table 2!
This game was against a guy who while friendly enough was clearly a lot more competitive than me. He actually ended up in the final and came 2nd.
From what I can remember:
ISD2, Avenger, Motti, and other upgrades, probably ECM and Xi7s
Gladiator (Abomination) Demo, Engine Techs, OE, APT, Admiral Monferrat
Rhymer
TIE Bomber
TIE Bomber
Dengar
TIE Advanced
TIE Advanced
Mauler Mithel
Firespray
Firespary
So he once again had initiative and decided to go first. He chose my Fleet Ambush.
Well this game was set up to be bloody from the start. We were stuck in almost from the get go.
One mistake cost me the game!!
I was a bit concerned due to the amount of squadrons but my guys did really well.
Again the whole thing is a bit of a blur but what happened was that a poor move by Han allowed his Rhymer and Bombers to get off a 2nd bombing run even though he was right next to them. Instead of taking care about where I placed him I plonked him down and there was a millimetre of asteroid in front of him before the bombers…..which means they weren’t engaged and they put some hurt onto my MC80. On the other side of things my squads smashed the TIE Advanced’s. Then he moved Mauler in and all my squadrons took a damage (YAY) I decided the Mauler needed to die!! So next turn killed Mauler and managed to take out Dengar too. Tied up his Firesprays with Wedge and then commenced bombing runs on the ISD combined with double taps provided by Yavaris.
Basically I lost my MC80 turn 3 and thought uh-oh. In trouble. This was due to combined hits from Rhymer and friends, as well as Demo shots and ISD front arc.
My Yavaris (largely ignored on the other side from Demo) managed to get into the ISD side arc only which kept him going and Jaina’s Light finally got into the fight around turn 3 by taking the long way round…..if she had got it earlier it could have helped. So Yavaris from the side shooting, combined with bombing runs and Jaina’s Light chipping away from the rear all combined into a dead ISD.
Han Solo killed off the 2 TIE bombers….and here comes the mistake….Once I had killed the last bomber in turn 6 I should have flown Han away from Rhymer since he was on 1 health. But I didn’t and Rhymer shot back doing 1 damage and removing Han……stupid error but I had been playing for 10 hours almost
So in the end I lost my MC80, Jaina's Light and Han Solo and I killed his ISD and a lot of squadrons…..Demo was also on 1 hull with no shields
271– 255 (think it was) and a 6-5 loss for me
I think fatigue was starting to set in and I clearly made a few mistakes here which cost me. Although it was quite close (16 points) and there was just that final thing with Han I didn’t do that cost me the game.
Game 5 (Rieekan Aces with Scuurg) (Superior Positions)
By this game things were starting to take a turn for the worse as everyone seems to be running on fumes. Haha. I was a long day so far but very challenging and fun.
I was sitting in 7th place after the game 4 loss and was hoping for a top 16 finish at least.
I was matched up against Matt from Durham who was in 8th so we were on table 4. He was a good guy and we had been chatting throughout the day and having a bit of banter so was good to have been matched up for a laugh…..unfortunately he was also flying a Rieekan Aces list.
From what I can remember:
Assault Frigate with Boosted Comms, Adar Talon,
Escort Frigate Yavaris, Veteran Captain
CR90b with SW7 Ions
CR90b with SW7 Ions
Wedge
Jan
X-wing
Scuurg
Scuurg
Scuurg
Nym
After some deliberation he decided to make me first player. I chose Superior Positions.
Didn’t fancy Precision Strike or Fleet Ambush for this game.
Once again a very cagey game. He deployed his whole fleet on one end of the table….I think hoping I would mirror him. I didn’t. I deployed on the opposite end facing towards him. I think this didn’t suit him initially as I think he wanted to rush me as his dials were set at high speed while mine were all going speed 1 with nav lined up for 1st turn to enable me to token up and give me options for later.
We slow rolled towards each other and eventually made contact around turn 3. My squads and his got stuck in but unfortunately a lot of mine got tied up with escorts and Jan making them all heavy.
He managed to get his CR90 in front of my MC80 and on the station so I couldn't really bomb him properly due to obstructed shots. The AF was just behind the CR90.
Yavaris and the other CR90 were coming in from the side.
Due to being tied up for a while by Jan making my fighters Heavy, the Scuurgs were able to get a good bombing run onto my MC80…..which hurt. 3 Scuurgs and Nym hitting with every shot was not very nice….but at least Nym didn’t get his ability off. Eventually I managed to kill off his Wedge and X-Wing and then took out Jan. Double tapping with my Wedge helped a lot.
By this time his CR90 that was blocking had taken a damage as well as my MC80 when I rammed into him. However when he activated his AF he rammed his own CR90 by a millimetre stopping him ramming my MC80 with it. Broadsides were exchanged and I managed to get some bombing runs off into the AF. The CR90 that was blocking was forced to move off and managed to broadside him and Yavaris finished the job with another broadside.
Eventually my MC80 went down (turn 4 I think) and I knew I was in trouble. Biggest ship gone as well as Rieekan. However thanks to Rieekan he stayed where he was and was able to activate. He did so and activated 5 squadrons. Did a bombing run onto the AF and seriously hurt it. Adar Talloned Keyan so he could have a go again. Then I moved. Now this is what happens at 11 at night when you have been playing all day….I forgot to broadside his Yavaris with my zombie MC80 before I moved. That could have cost me the game right there!!
However then Yavaris activated Keyan and double tapped the rear of the AF…..killing it and earning me 2 victory tokens as well.
Next turn I hit his CR90 with some TRC shots at medium range which stripped some shields.
He swung his CR90 around to try and hit my Yavaris and CR90A in the next turn…..but since I got to go first I activated my CR90, hit him and then ran away out of range. Then I activated Yavaris who squadron commanded Luke, Keyan and Wedge onto bombing runs onto his Yavaris. Since it was damaged already I hit the side shields with Wedge, managed to get a hit/crit through onto hull with Luke and Keyan finished him off. He still had 2 Scuurgs and Nym left but Nym was tied up by Dash and the others were out of range to hit anything without commands.
Once his CR90 had moved I activated Dash in the squadron phase and bombed his unshielded rear for a hit/crit after reroll and then unfortunately for him Dutch was in range of the rear after he moved. Dutch finished the job with the last roll of the game.
Wow what a tight one. By turn 5 we had an audience as everyone was done but us so that was entertaining.
I really thought I was in trouble there after losing my MC80 and Rieekan but my Aces managed to pull it out of the bag. I managed to table him and get 3 superior position tokens so the result was:
445 – 208 (I think) 8-3 win
This was enough and I was pleasantly surprised at prize giving that I got 4th place.
There was another player on the same points as me but I had about a 120 point higher MOV.
