So, myself and Matt have decided to combine forces and reduce our painting piles in one fell swoop. We got the Stormclaw box set a while back in a plan to learn the new 7e rules for 40K and promptly...did nothing with them. So I added some Space Wolves to my ever growing Space Marine chapter collection while Matt's Green Horde also got some new recruits.
Skip forward a few months and a new forum, we'll be painting up our respective Stormclaw forces and playing through the scenarios which...look really tough for the Space Wolves. Sigh. Also, I actually flogged Krom Dragongaze on Ebay to fund the purchase of some Thunderwolves (as I'm going to build up into a Harald Deathwolf force rather than some random angry dude who doesn't even have his own wolf) so I've got a kitbashed wolf lord instead..who'll end up being a Rune Priest (does that make sense? It does to me).
I'm currently working on the Fierce Eye's Finest (Wolf Guard Terminators)...pics to follow once I have a recharged camera...Matt is painting something green. Lots of green.

Tom is not wrong I am still alive and painting... well as much as I ever was anyway. So I'm taking up the mantle of painting the Ork side of the Stormclaw box set, in the hopes that Mary Berry will judge my offerings favourably! To complete the first scenario in the box Tom only needs to paint up a lowly five Space Wolves whereas I have to paint up 17 green madmen which hardly seems fair does it? So I suppose I best get on with it. My camera is charged, so I guess that means I win Week 1? I've never painted greenskins before so a test model is in order, and I've found in my bits box an Ork that I think came free with the White Dwarf, to celebrate the launch of Assault on Black Reach, so I've glued him together: And in a shocking display of non-procrastination I've actually painted the model. As all the mobs in the Stormclaw background are Goffs I've been practising my checks: There's still a few bits of fabric to do, but I haven't got the needed colours and my local Games Workshop is shut until Tuesday (sigh). Any thoughts, other than "we moved the entire forum to escape your blathering", welcome. So in preparation for a productive week ahead I have built my unit of Gretchin: So that's it for this week, though there are rumours that Procrastinaton by Numbers, everyone's favourite blog, survived the destruction of the Warhammer World. For my sanity I hope not! Matt

Looking good. Darn.
I should probably add...the 5 models I 'have' to paint aren't actually the Terminators I'm painting..I should be working on 5 Grey Hunters. Silly Tom!

Nice stuff lads. Matt, have you thought about putting some checks or dags on the choppa? Thanks. I think some of the Goffs will definitely get checks on the choppa, but thought might be a bit much on this chap with his armour and shoulder panel.

The Saga of Steapa Berzerkergang, Shield of The Aesir..or...Tom paints a test model tooI'm making progress on the Wolf Guard, was on a training course in Victoria today so took the opportunity to scuttle home early and add the highlights to my test Wolf Guard Terminator. The Stormclaw unit has a slightly odd line up with one heavy flamer, a Champion w/power sword, one storm bolter/power fist, one storm bolter/chain fist and one big loony with a Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield. Guess he'll be at the front then. Straight forward 'my first space marine' type painting: Army Painter Wolf Grey undercoat, a very thin glaze of The Fang on the lower parts of the armour (hasn't really come out, will skip this stage on the others). A few browns/dheneb stone for the furs, Iyanden Darksun (couple of layers) for the shoulder pad, black and chainmail drybrush for the hamer then a wash of Nuln Oil. Once the wash dried I highlighted with Fenrisian Grey. Well, actually I highlighted with Fenrisian and *then* washed it, then highlighted again. Didn't make a blind bit of difference so again will skip that stage for the others! The week ahead...Only the unit's character gets a name in the fluff, Beoric Winterfang. I've decided to give the others names as well...once they move beyond base paints: Eagle eyed (ho ho!) readers may notice that the Heavy Flamer looks a bit assault cannony. Yeah. I like assault cannons and the model just looks much better armed this way. Counts as for the upcoming play through of course!

Test model is looking good, how are you enjoying all the edge highlighting?
I definitely painted Orks today and didn't finish off my Land Speeder Storm. Definitely...

It's Week 2. And yes I may have got a tiny bit distracted by other projects (I swear I only had five minutes work to do on the Space Marines but it took 3 days!). Despite that some progress has been made on my fledgling Ork army. I finally managed to go to Games Workshop (despite my local store being closed due to random days off and illness of staff) and pick up some extra paints I needed - exciting things such as Dryad Bark, Karak Stone and Hashut Copper. With these I finished my test Ork from last week - you probably won't notice the difference, it's mainly the gold I've tidied up and the boots I have painted! I've also painted a test Gretchin - they have lighter skin than the Orks, but mostly otherwise the same. For the basing I've tried to add concrete struts to the base as debris, as if the Orks are rampaging across a devastated city. What do you think? The "concrete" posts are actually just bits of sprue cut up. I quite it like it, especially on the Gretchin as their short height really makes it look like they are in and among the rubble. Still have a bit of work to do on the rest of the Gretchin mob, but all the bases and a load of washing (pleasingly almost all my colours need a wash of Agrax Earthshade - which speeds everything up nicely!) means they're very much on the way! Hopefully by next week the Gretchin will be done. Thoughts and encouragement as always very welcome!

Good stuff as always Matt - whats going to be in the finished force? Well so far it will be the Stromclaw box set - so Grukk Face-Rippa, 5x Nobz, 3x Killa Kans and the pictured Gretchin. I also have the other half of the Assault on Black Reach Box that I bought to start my Ultramarines so five more Nobz, 20x Boyz, 3x Deffkoptas and another Warboss. Not bad for an army I actually only spent £35 on (getting half of Stormclaw). After that not sure, but have vowed no Orks can be bought until all that is painted!!

Winter(fang) is coming...So the main benefit of working from home for a week is I have time to paint. Also, I can take breaks to post things on forums, which is nice. I've 'finished' (i.e. not finished) my Wolf Guard squad... (Counts as Heavy Flamer as far as this particular campaign goes...Counts as an assault cannon in proper games because - pew pew!) Er...two terminator cruxes? Surely some mistake? Nope, Sven Tveirqxl (Google assures me that means Two Shoulder in Old Norse) is famed for wearing his dead twin brother's shoulder pad as part of his own armour. Not really, I just made that up after assembling him wrong. Beoric Winterfang himself - missing a banner pole/icon as I haven't decided which one I like. Also I've realised that he's missing an arm from the pelt which should hang down over his shoulder. I have no idea where this part is. Assembly 1 - Tom O. Overall impressions are these are great models, about half again (at least) as big as their old metal counterparts. The edge highlighting is not exactly delicate. On the first model I ended up going back over with the original base coat (Wolf Grey) to clean it up but I felt it then lacked definition. I actually prefer the exaggerated 'cartoon' highlights these chaps have and re-re-painted the first one! I keep saying to myself that I'll learn to paint 'clean' and artfully blend various colours but whenever I do I'm not convinced by the results and go back to dirt and heavy contrast...Eldar are not in my future it seems!

So we've had a fortnight, and in my third update I can excitingly reveal that I have finished my first unit (Are they called units in 40K? Are they called units any more in Warhammer?). Whatever, I've painted up my Gretchin squad - Rustgob Runts, and I've based them - unlike Tom <insert raspberry blowing and other appropriate name calling>. This unit includes Rustgob (Ork with stick) and Squig. I like painting Squigs, and he's come out well, I think all my unit shall have Squigs wherever possible. Or maybe just units of Squigs - perhaps I should have started a Warhammer Orc & Goblin army! Can you get pet squigs? No, stop getting distracted. I have built up my next unit Skrak’s Skull-Nobz. According to the Stormclaw background Skrak has a "horn-helmeted charge" which give him the Hammer of Wrath special rules, as such I've modeled with a horned helmet and lots of spikey shoulder gubbinz! He's the centre one in case you are wondering! The units equipment options are specified in the background, so if I've taken rubbish combos it's technically not my fault. I also discovered that I have another model to paint as one of the Nobz comes with an Ammo Runt. How's that fair I have loads more models to paint than Tom?!?! But on the plus side one of them has a look out squig!! So next week's task is to start work on these, maybe even finish them off, let's not get too excited.
