So I have essentially cracked and after over a year of refusal, am going to jump into a miniatures game. I know most people at the club are also new or newish to warmahordes but you all seem to have managed what I can't, so any advice is welcome; how do I pick a faction?! I initially liked Circle when I saw the Circle/Legion demo a week or so ago, but of course wanted to find out about the others, can't go making this decision only seeing 2 options. Turns out, all the factions are awesome in their own way! Whyyy?!
- I still like Circle both for the fact that I've always liked druidy types and for possibly hilarious the hit & run games, but they don't seem to have much in the way of heavy hitters, and I'm not convinced of their staying power if they're balanced around being able to run away... I do hear that there's a possible bargain to be had on some of their models, which is a definite plus on my budget!
- Then I found Skorne, and (don't draw conclusions) was oddly drawn to the idea of evil, torturing desert nomads, not to mention that they enslave 4 armed elephants and giant scorpions. They seem to have more heavy hitters (though obviously less accurate), and have a range of casters that either make them faster or give them more staying power.
- Having thought I'd decided on a Hordes faction, I made the mistake of checking out the Convergence, who take the flexibility that the Skorne seem to have to ridiculous levels. I don't like limiting my options (hence the difficulty in making this choice!), so this seems great for me, but I worry about the apparent stance that they won't be updated the way other faction are, so could get left behind in any arms race. They also seem to have a lot of casters that focus on facing other 'machines who would suffer against Hordes. There isn't a single model in their army that I don't like the look of, and the idea of clockwork machines with souls is pretty cool.
- Menoth. There's something about holy crusaders/zealots bringing cleansing fire to the heathens that doesn't need explaining. They seem slow but able to withstand (or stop the opponent handing out) a bit of a beating on the way to wherever they're going. Decent across the board, great at messing with the enemy (or refusing to be messed with by the enemy), but the lack of speed gives me a constant nagging feeling I can't shake. Lots of their models also look great but like they'd be a nightmare to paint.
- Retribution are the last ones I haven't managed to push off to the side, and I'm not really sure why aside from the fact that their warjacks have such a different look, and they generally seem based around speed. Like Circle though, they seem to lack staying power, and like Convergence, they seem a little more biased to taking on Warmachine factions rather than Hordes ones (mainly just the ability to ignore camped focus though I think).
I think I've managed to limit my option to those 5, nothing really stands out for me about most of the others, aside from Legion and Cryx (yes, I like evil things quite a lot...), but I get the impession that they're quite heavily represented both in general and within the club (Legion at least) and I think the variety of something different would be more fun. In general I think I'm looking for versatility>speed>power>durability and I'd hugely appreciate any help in settling on one faction, being told if I have a misconception in anything above or any opinions on what fits that scale best.
