When we gonna try it out....? I've been thinking about this. If there is some interest in trying KoW we could do a Saturday and get a few games in.

It was Quest time again this week. With the party leader (the noble this time) having an impromptu holiday Helmut stepped up and took command. Having battled their way through another section of the dungeon the adventurers found themselves back at the entrance, although they had rescued some Sylvanian peasants and a noble on the way.
With the dwarf having announced he's taking up a post as a lecturing position at the Naggaroth University to teach trap disarming techniques retirement beckons for Helmut rather than finding another party to join. A retirement involving counting his riches and study. Maybe he could sponsor other parties for a cut of what they find, maybe he might learn some new powerful spells and enter politics....but first he has to stay alive.

It was my first grown up game of KoW yesterday. 2,000 points and scenarios. It was a close run thing in the end but I was on the losing side - nothing new there then.
Unlike my previous games this was the first time I'd written my own list and I opted for dwarves backed by a detachment of ogres. Overall, I liked the list I used. A large unit of rifles with a +1 to hit item dishes out serious pain when supported by a couple of organ guns but it seems vital to apply some road blocks. In other news the ogre siege breakers (ironguts) did well; they are hard to hurt if you attack them in the front and dish out some serious pain. The boomers underperformed; possibly due to the small numbers bit my own ineptitude may have played a part.
I didn't get as much as I'd have liked out of my badger riders. One of my two units was pretty effective but the other one was badly shot up. I'm convinced they are a really effective unit so I'll be keeping them in future armies, even if they are just allies of my main force. Flyers are still a problem and I need to find a way of dealing with them effectively. One day I might even succeed.

My Krudger on winged slasher was a boss - even when I played him properly! The great thing about 2000 pts is that you get to use all your toys. i didn't use my Giant to his full potential but I'm glad he was there.
I'm also glad the goreriders decided against taking the Siege Breakers in the front. A Krudger in the back was so much more satisfying!

Turns out all Ogres have brutal - I really need to remember this in future as it would have really helped when the breakers charged your stuff that got wavered.

Yes you would have routed them as the difference was 1. Would have stopped the Krudger charging them, which would have meant the rifle guys copped it!

Finally - a first win at X-wing. I'm hoping to back it up with another solid game before Christmas as talk once again turns to hosting an event early next year. Traditionally there as been threads about wargaming new year resolution and I'm taking the opportunity to ponder that now.
My usual resolutions involved painting a certain amount of stuff or achieving something at one of the events we used to run. I'd like to see more events next year but that's a different matter. Next year I want to attend a proper tournament - probably for X-Wing. Nice and simple but given that I haven't got around to going to anything outside of the club yet it will be a novel experience.
Work on this will commence after Christmas as I'll need to a) sort out a decent all comer list and b) make sure I have all the cards etc so I don't need to proxy.

If you're looking for future purchases, I think it might be worth waiting for the Imperial Veteran pack they just announced: www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2015/12/14/rule-the-skies/I've had my Defender and Bomber patiently waiting on the shelf for their time to shine, this should give them a rather nice shove in the right direction.

It was a funny old year 2015. The demise of Warhammer led to a scramble to try out new systems, most notably X-Wing, Age of Sigmar, Kings of War and Warmachine.
I liked AoS but it had a fatal flaw; the inability to have a balanced pick-up game. Its a bit bonkers but in a good way. Warmachine isn't for me. I gave it a go but I couldn't get to grips with it and didn't get to a position where I was really enjoying the games. That leaves X-Wing and KoW.
X-Wing is a great little game with a low model count, perfect for transporting stuff through the rush hour. I like KoW too. It has weaknesses and there are large parts of the game where the person whose turn it isn't doesn't have any involvement in the game. But its still fun and gives me a chance to fight the occasional fantasy game used massed ranks of troops.
How is this relevant?
Well each yea I try and have a long-ish term project in mind. As X-Wing comes ready painted the only hobby time it takes outside of playing is coming up with a list. There aren't many opponents available for KoW (just Mr Sub-optimal really) and I don't want to invest in anything I won't get to use. This puts aside the slightly off beat ideas I had such as an imagi-nation revolutionary war army.
I think this would be a good opportunity to re-visit the piles of plastic crack I have lying around the house. Most of its painted to a greater or lesser extent but most of the stuff I have was done years ago and has seen a lot of use and taken a bit of a beating. So the plan for this year will be to put together a fantasy army that looks reasonable on the tabletop. Currently I'm leaning towards a blend of chaos and ogres but there's a good chance I'll go off piste because, well, its what I do.
Now I have a camera all I need to do is work out how to post pictures and I can try and turn this into a proper thread. Erk!

Right, I've signed up for my first proper event. A small, local tournie would be the perfect way to dip my toe in the water. But I haven't done that. I'm off to Brum to a 500+ person event.
I've got some time to work out what I want to do but I'll be looking to build the core of my list sharpish. I've only played with Imperials to date but I'm tempted to shift my allegiance to the rebels for a list where I can get some shield recovery. Time to start planning.

I've signed up for my first big event - Xwing at the Game Expo in June. Time to start preparing.
Now I think the sensible approach would be to select a list. practice at the club and build up to some smaller events just before the main event. This will let me gain a deep understanding of how my squadron works and maximise my chance of not looking like a tit.
Then there's what I'm actually doing.
I've designed a list (so far, so good) but I'm tinkering every week. Thats not so bad I've got ages right? Well I'm currently running Imperials but eyeing up rebels. I've also ordered a ticket to the Warboar event this month but I haven't had all the stuff I need arrive in the post yet. Hopefully it all works out.
With the demise of other miniature games I enjoy playing the promised painting is looking unlikely. I'll probably be using this thread in the near future to document my attempts to get ready for a major tournament with all its high (yes its supposed to be singular) and lows.

You would have definitely won our X-wing game on Thursday if it wasn't for your damage deck. Again. Seriously, it's like a Witch has cursed you or something. Mike: Krasias, Whisper, Academy vs Jono: Bobba, Echo - Mike had killed off my Bobba Fett and it was then his whole list vs Echo. We had one important turn where we had to predict where each other's phantoms would be. Seeing where I decloaked, Mike moved correctly to keep Whisper at distance and with a clear shot. However, this involved clipping an asteroid -> rolled a crit -> double damage and death.
