I joined up with Simran, Sam, Matt and Jono yesterday and headed to the store championship at Warboar, Bromley yesterday.
Its quite a nice venue although the gaming hall was pretty packed. It would probably be really uncomfortable if all the tables were being used.
55 players turned up with a format of 6 games with the top 8 then going into a quarter final for the chance to go into a semi and then the final. A long old day for everyone, especially those at the top.
I took my usual list:
Whisper with advanced cloaking device, tactician and veteran instincts;
Krassis Trelix with heavy laser cannon and engine upgrade; and
Academy Tie.
Game 1 - Jonny (Decimater and Punisher)
My first match up was against one of the 186th Squadron. It was a very tanky list but lacked movement and defensive dice. I got lucky with my dice delivering a ton of hits which he could do nothing to stop. The game only lasted about 20 minutes and came out as a 100-0 win.
In other news Simran got about the worst draw imaginable. Having played X-Wing for about a month his game one was against the current National Champion but he held his own and only went down with a small loss. Well done, that's a moral victory if nothing else.
Game 2 - Matt (Y-Wing stress bot with 2 X-Wings and 2 Z-95s)
I got off to a decent start. Whisper got double stressed but I got rid of the Y-Wing early and started bashing up his other ships, focussing my fire effectively. Matt then managed to start turning it around as we fought each other to a standstill. Sadly my Firespray picked up a crit which caused extra damage if I hit an obstacle and Matt managed to block me up on an obstacle. It came down to a X-Wing (2 HP) v Firespray (1HP) and he got the shot off first. A tough game that almost went to time but a very entertaining game. But I lost 77-100.
Game 3 - Andrew (Hound's tooth and 2 Black Sun aces)
Ouch. I walked into a barrage of homing missiles supported by crack shot and some other gubbins. In Turn 2 my firespray was obliterated before Andrew turned his attention to whisper. I got an ace and the plucky tie fighter put just enough damage on the Hound to grab half its points but I was never in the game. 50-100 loss.
We don't see much scum and villany (apart from pTom) at the club so it was interesting to see something very different.
Game 4 - Lloyd (Firespray and a couple of other ships)
The endurance factor was starting to kick in. Lloyd had taken determination and feedback array on everything plus an ion cannon and TLT. The feedback array did me. My usual style involves getting the close to get as many attack dice as I can but I didn't fully account for the effectiveness of what he could do and I totally forgot about as we hit the end game. Whisper doesn't like stuff that just does damage. A loss, 60 - 100. I really need to work on different flying strategies.
Game 5 - Henry (A-Wing, B-Wing, E-Wing)
Henry's list was built around stressing itself to get him extra bonuses with push the limit galore. But it was tricks that gave him small gains and didn't affect my ability to play my game. All my opponents up to and including Henry turned up with 100 points, effectively allowing Whisper the initiative, It really told in this one as I chewed the rebel ships up. With all the stress flying around Henry reduced his ability to move around so I could keep my guns blazing nicely.
With high manoeuvrability not really being a 'thing' I can see why he went the route he did. A win 100 - 24.
Game 6 - Damian (3 Interceptors)
By this time everyone was shattered. Simran had called it a day and I was faced with the most agile list I'd seen all day. An agile list, but one that requires concentration to fly. I'd seen Jono use similar builds at the club so I knew what I would be facing. For the first time in the day I didn't automatically have initiative but, despite winning the roll, Damian decided to let me move and shoot first. I don't really understand why. With PS 10 and 9 ships he could have shut whisper down but I wasn't going to grumble.
The early exchange was nominated by my firsespray as the PS 10 interceptor was blown out of space. The large arcs from the firespray reduced the effectiveness of Damian's movement and the game ended as he rocked himself. I'm sure he made mistakes due to fatigue, it was the end of a long day. A big win for me 100-24.
I'd gone into the day aiming for two win and a top 40 placing. The pre-event announcement declared it the biggest recorded store championships with 55 people there. There was a least one, possibly 2, National Champs in tough field. I came 19th, much to my surprise, picking up a CP-3O card. Matt also got in one the prizes with Jono finishing somewhere around 41st. Simran didn't finish very highly with 5 losses before he called it after all his games went to time.
That left Sam. Sam finished 3rd and made the cut. The rest of us left him to his next game and went to the pub. In the end he told us he'd lost his QF, which was a shame. But a big well done to Sam who finished the main event with a 5-1 win ratio and was top Eagle (by miles).
