Some of the club members have been asking about points lists and buy in costs. After some very preliminary investigations I've determined the following points:-
So, you could field a valid army out of two half core sets. ie Vader, four stormtroopers and two bike squads with some upgrades is 800pts or Luke, four troopers and two ATRTs are the same.
After this you could add whatever units as you like and given the limited units initially available at least for a few weeks, learn the game with a starter army and pick a unit up once every couple of months or so.
So, if you asked what was the best way to get started for a minimal outlay, find someone who is interested as well, buy a core set each (£64 at Darksphere) and swap your other faction models out. While you may want more dice (£11.19 Darksphere), these aren't essential and you definitely don't need any more templates.
The next thing I'd get is a rebel speeder (£22.39) or AT-ST (£37.49) as appropriate mainly because of the pure Star Wars hit they add to your army.
New troopers/speeders/ ATRTs are about £20 a unit, commanders around £10.
If you didn't fancy splitting a box, you could do as I have and buy the core set plus one of each expansion for your chosen faction will give you an 800 point army as well (commander 200, 3 troopers 270, 2 support 180, 1 heavy 200+)
So there you have it, I was very surprised about the buy in cost and army builds, the number of minis feels about right as well from a hobby perspective, I'm not feeling overwhelmed by the number I have to paint and they are very easy to assemble.
Again, if you would like a demo or have a game, let me know. In the meantime, here's a great little list builder I've found to play around with.

All the best,
Sam
- A valid 800point army requires one commander and three corps units (troopers)
- A unit of troopers with a heavy weapon is about 90pts
- A unit of speeder bikes or an AT-RT is about 90 points
- Your commander is around 160-195 points without upgrades
- An AT-ST or Speeder is around 200 points without upgrades
- There are currently no faction specific upgrades (a first for FFG as far as I know) so you can safely collect one faction only.
