Another week, another beatdown. Oops.
It was my first 35 point game using a scenario. That means pledge 2 has been hit. Huzzah. The bad news was I was facing Tom's arsonists and it was a real uphill struggle. Still I think I learnt a few things.
Games of warmachine carry on until the very end. This may seem silly but without turn limits the approach is very different. I took an early lead in my game by destroying Tom's objective but I couldn't capitalise by forcing him to push forward and potentially get put of position. Neither of us were picking up any other objective points so it all came down to assassination, which I suck at.
The fires weren't really the major problem I expected, mainly due to Commissar Birdseye making my winter guard tough. Instead I was hamstrung by a small unit of plebs which made itself indestructible. It caged in a big chunk of my army and I couldn't break through it or go around.
I'm still being too reactive. The destructor jack may be hard to kill but its a waste of nine points as it wont dish it out in a meaningful way. I'll give it another outing or 2 but when I'm in a position to get more stuff its getting replaced. I hear the assassins are good (is his true Jack H?) so theyu might be worth a look along with some pikes.
Other thoughts for the day? I'm a tad frustrated by the lack of story potential. This comes from having to pick a special character as a leader rather than picking a generic nameless leader that can establish its own history and character - so no Father Brian the Blessed for warmachine.
Until next time.

Aye, best advice I could give anyone starting WMH would be magnetise things like jacks and warbeasts wherever you could so that if you don;t like a particular one, or its now and then you can just go with others.
Menoth lately are a very hard nut to crack, not entirely sure what the shift has been. At least he didn't have the colossal throwing down fore aoes... Which is what normally happens with Feora2! Each game of WMH in the beginning or even with changing faction etc is an uphill struggle while you figure stuff out, don;t be disheartened by losses, have a chat afterwards see what stuff worried your opponent, how you might have done stuff a little differently etc.
As you might have found having a scenario and not just needing to kill the enemy warcaster makes a huge difference as you can concentrate on going other ways with the games to start applying pressure. Start scoring early or jamming zones/flags full of infantry as khador and you won;t be going too far wrong!
A lot of khador lists only have one jack, normally a spriggan or Behemoth character jack too, also have a look at iron fang pikemen/blackdragons as they are another popular choice for khador players! Kayazy are pretty nifty, high def but low arm, so vulrnerable to blasts! Also seen the odd list using Man o'war units but normally a specific warcaster with them to get the most out of them.
As for story side I'm planning on running something like that very soon and if I'm remembering right the story league you can use a non warcaster as a hero in the lost who gets xp, abilities etc. I'll need to double check that though!

So pledge 2 - play a 35 point game was successful. Hurrah. We used scenery, a mission and everything. That leads nicely on to pledge 3 and some painting.
Much like G I'm hitting a point where spare time is pretty limited so I'll carry on with theme of quoting low as its working so far. FOor pledge 3 I'll base something, probably Captain Birdseye (aka Kovlev Joe)

Its the end of this pledge slot and I said I'd base a model. I've done it woo-hoo. For my next trick I'll play a game.

I don't really have much spare time at the moment - and struggled to even base one figure in the last two weeks. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll be in a better position but there is no guarantee

I got a game in against Rob yesterday to complete the pledge. He didn't have the caber chucking trollbloods so I didn't have to worry about troll bowling getting through my defence. Rob was using a caster that can sacrifice the guys around him to avoid damage so the battle of the meat shields was on.
My superior firepower did well in the early turns and the widowmakers did a good job of tying down a fair old chunk of Rob's force. Knowing I had to take down the meatshield to get at his caster (it was an assassination game) I launched my spriggan into the heart of Rob's infantry. It didn't get the job done and was subsequently smashed apart by Rob's surprisingly heavy beast.
From then on I was on the back foot. The winterguard with tough and all the defence in the world fought valiantly but with my aggressive gone it was only a matter of time until the inevitable defeat.
So, on to the lessons learnt. I need to be more cautious with the Spriggan and not waste his charge. It can (and has but not in this game) make a real mess of whatever it hits but I need to choose my target more carefully. Secondly I need to stop carrying passengers. Holt managed to do a little damage and so did the devestator but its 13 points wasted as they don't add enough value. I've spoken about dropping them for some time and this really needs to happen.
For my next pledge its time for some painting. I'm going to be a bit more ambitious (shocking I know) and I'll paint the Spriggan. I won't base him as part of the pledge but if I can, I will.

Good learning points for everyone I reckon. If you can get the first strike, great, but given how easily most things can be taken down, you have to make sure you use it effectively! Getting the spriggan into Rob's heavy on your terms instead of his could have turned the whole game around I guess? Thanks for writing it up mate, and looking forward to seeing some painting

My distinct lack of camera means any paint work can be seen exclusively at the club

Can't you take appallingly bad photos with your phone like I do?

I would if I had a camera on my 'phone. My telephone is one step up from two cans and a piece of string.
